Abstract. Why is traffic flow on data networks sometimes self-similar? We make a simple deterministic model of data transfer between remote sites. We show that waveforms which describe the network behaviour are aperiodic, despite the deterministic nature of our system, and also often self-similar, with a Hurst parameter close to unity.
